In the world where you can travel almost everywhere, Uganda is still an omitted destination. Although this country is packed with beauty. The fact, that it still isn’t a tourist destination, is actually very beneficial for you. It is a great choice to experience Africa in affordable way without disturbance of crowds of tourists. Uganda is still authentic in everyday life.
While travelling around Uganda you will be surprised how nice and friendly Ugandans are. It is a safe country where you can travel solo with no problem. Also prices are still kept relatively low in comparison to tourist destinations.
Here is the list of reasons why you should consider writing Uganda to the list of destinations to visit:
As already mentioned, Uganda is a safe country. If you follow generally known unwritten rules you can enjoy really amazing time.
Public transport is cheap! One option is to hire a car for the whole vacation. If you travel on budget or do not feel to drive on your own, you can always choose cheaper option.
I would recommend avoiding Matatu (9 seat taxi used as a public transport. It is very cheap, but also very dangerous.) A good alternative is to use a “special hire”. You can ask anyone on the street about “special hire station” and local people will direct you where to find one. There is always some. A driver with a car you can hire for one or few days. The price is negotiable, so it is good to get informed about average price before you reach someone. With the special hire you have control over the driver. Drivers are also good guides to help you deal with things you need.
Moving around the city of Kampala is also very simple. Using boda-boda motorbikes is very easy to do. They are everywhere offering their services. You just reach the street and wait. If you plan to enjoy Kampala night life, good practice is to ask security of the club to recommend you the boda boda driver. Do not catch one on the street, always use the recommended one. Or, again safer way, use Uber.
While planning your safari trip, there are many safari providers to reach. It might be confusing which one to choose. The prices usually include full service of the guide and driver in one person, car and fuel, accommodation and entrance fee.
If you prefer travelling in small group on privately, some providers can tailor the program for you according to your expectations and potentialities.
Or, if you are a adventurous person and do not need any guide, you can travel solo. Only thing you need is the car and map. Be ready for surprisingly far distances within the national park, all dusty roads and almost no signs and speed limit not more than 40km/hr. There is a high possibility of getting lost. Make sure you reach the park early enough to get to your accommodation before darkness and (!) that your accommodation is booked before. It happens quite often that all providers capacity is full. There are also no gas stations within the national park so put enough fuel before entering the park.
In the morning of safari time, there are guides waiting to be hired. They will guide you to find the best spots for animal watching. They are also informed where the big cats might be seen, which is the major reason to hire one. For giraffes or elephants you do not need any.
It is forbidden to leave the car in the National park. Lions and big cats can surprise you anytime and anywhere. Do not underestimate the danger.
While travelling on budget, there are budget lines with fixed prices – fuel, national park entrance fee etc. But there still is an area flexible enough to safe quite a good amount of money. Uganda bids many options for budget accommodation, bed and breakfast and dormitories. Also local food is very cheap and affordable.
Talking about program and activities of your choice, you need to be ready to open the wallet and pay the providers. But again, the cheaper option is available. Afternoon walk around villages, visiting communities and meeting local people is very nice and enjoyable experience. And it is for free!
And one recommendation at the end:
In case you choose a cheap accommodation that does not provide swimming pool, no problem. You can relax and take a sunbath in every top resort or hotel. Just pay small entrance fee and enjoy the whole day by the pool.
